Past Events & Projects

We've been busy since our inception in 2010!

December 2013:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Admission sales are now over.

There are no door payments.

Only names on the WILL CALL list will be admitted.

See you next time if you missed this year's event admission payment deadline.  Happy holidays!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ever wonder what it might be like to celebrate the holiday season at Burning Man?  Complete with the 10 principlesand all that good stuff that makes so many of us call Burning Man "home"?

Looking for an opportunity to show your super awesome, but just-a-little-too-twisted-for-prime time art piece?

Hoping to celebrate the holidays with your stay at home partner, but work for an employer that thinks a lunchtime potluck office holiday party is great for team building?

Want to wear something a little extra sexy to a holiday party, but concerned what you manager might think?  Well, you're in luck...

Join us for another Burning Man-inspired night of fun with wicked live acts, DJs, and art by you, as well as some fabulous prizes, maybe a crowning holiday costume competition… and no expensive bar!

UndieComp 2010UndieComp 3D! and UndieComp: Final Missionwere smashing successes! If you weren't able to make it to those events, just ask anyone who did to find out what you missed. With the enthusiasm and collaborations triggered by The T.O.A.S.T. of Toronto's officially unofficial previous events, our next big night out will be a foray into creating an UndieComp-spirited, Burning Man-inspired secular yuletide office-style pARTy that doesn't suck!

This time around we'll be hosting an optional sit down catered meal, that will be prefaced by a cocktail reception and followed by excitement, socializing and all new entertainment as provided by YOU, the pARTicipants! And this time around you'll have the opportunity to come AS DRESSED UP (or as stripped down) as you like! Imagine being able to have a civilized conversation over a nice meal with friends old and new before lifting off into a super fun night of fun! Happy tummy, happy you, happy holiday pARTy!

We'll be taking a WILL CALL ONLY approach to admissions again, which means that there will be no physical tickets. As such, all pARTicipants will be known in advance. We do this in an effort to create a safe space with, and for you for the night.

Our hope is to that the event will be another huge success thanks to you and the good folks that you'll invite along through your one-degree of separation friendship networks. (We will NOT be mass advertising this event. Please share this invite with like-minded good folks like you if you wish.)

For our night of fun we've booked the gorgeous historic Lithuanian House with its high vaulted ceilings and beautiful stain glassed windows.  The venue is incredibly conveniently located at 1573 Bloor Street West, literally a block west of the Dundas West TTC station. An all-night taxi stand is right across the street from the station and there is plenty of affordable lot and free street parking.

Admission prices are being kept as reasonably-priced as possible given that we are just trying to cover the cost of the event.   We have absolutely no profit motive. All funds raised will go directly to pARTy.

If the event is like all previous TOAST of Toronto events it will sell out in advance.  That said, get your payment in ASAP and book SATURDAY, DECEMBER 21st in your calendar for the one event this holiday season that you won't want to miss!

If you're interested in getting involved, please email thetoastoftoronto@gmail.com.  We'll need helpers to make all aspects of the event work from entertainment to coat check and running the bar, so please chip in however you can. Thanks in advance.

See you there... in your costume, formal and/or under wear!

* Alcoholic beverages will be available. For the safety of our pARTicipants, anyone who appears to be too intoxicated will be offered non-alcoholic drinks only.

:: The Trip Management Plan ::

We'll start the optional dinner portion of the night at 7 PM and the general entry part at 9:30 PM.  Doors will close to admissions at midnight (12 AM) to allow our door staff volunteers to enjoy the night of fun until we wind down at 3 AM.

Come early and pARTicipate 'til late as we envision what it would be like to celebrate the holidays on the Playa!  We'll share and enjoy a variety of "theme camp"-like experiences through a mix of different music styles, various lighting and imagery, and a number of interactive formats that will re-create a night on the Playa. If you've never been to Burning Man, this night will give you a taste of what you might expect in the dust of Black Rock City (the name given to the 50k+ person event site). If you're a seasoned Burner, the fiery yearning in you to return "Home" will definitely be stoked in a festive holiday way!

:: How do we plan to fund this much fun you ask? ::

We're collecting just enough money from pARTicipants to pay for the venue rental and other event-related necessities. As much of the proceeds collected as possible will go toward the event. As with past TOAST events we're not fundraising for any purpose other than to make this one night friggin' fantastic.  Again, we have absolutely no personal profit motive.

Please see the event Admission Info page for payment details.

:: Stay lubed by donating to the Gift Bar  ::

In an attempt to create an experience that is as close as possible to actually being at Burning Man, there will be ABSOLUTELY NO COMMERCE, and as such, no cash bar at the TOAST Roast.  Nevertheless, we recognize that drinks are a part of festive pARTy culture, so we ask that pARTicpants bring a gift to help stock the communal bar that we'll be setting up. Please bring an *unopened* beverage to help stock the Gift Bar.  Please feel to bring and share anything you think will make the bar a hit. :D  Note that you don't have to bring a lot.  Just a reasonable to cover what you think you and possibly a friend might drink at a typical house party.

Feel free to BRING a cup and enjoy the Gift Bar all night! This will help cut down on waste and will allow you to personalize your experience. Be sure to label you cup with your name.

PLEASE PLAN TO DRINK RESPONSIBLY.  DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE.  HAVE A CLEAR PLAN TO GET HOME.

:: Some important notes about your Kiddies and Cameras ::

The TOAST Roast is a 19 years of age and older private event. Government issued photo ID will be required for entrance. If you have pARTicipated in a T.O.A.S.T. event in the past, a photocopy of your ID will do. If the TOAST ROast will be your first T.O.A.S.T. event, please bring your actual ID.

Feel free to bring your cameras, but plan to be respectful of your fellow pARTicipants and ask permission to take photos that they will be in BEFORE shooting.  Thanks!

:: Don't wave away the Waiver: Read this Fine Print!!! ::

All pARTicipants voluntarily partake in UndieComp: Final Mission of their own accord and will need to agree to, sign and present before entering the event a WAIVER releasing the event organizers of any liability associated with participating in the event.

TOAST Roast pARTicipant Waiver

:: Plan to leave your valuables at home ::

While we will do everything we can to ensure to create a safe container for you to enjoy, the organizers assume NO responsibility for lost or stolen items. Please come prepared to carry only the valuables you absolutely need for the night with you at all times. Leave unnecessary items at home.  There will be a coat check, but, like on Playa, you remain responsible for your personal items at all times.

:: Get involved, pARTicipate, make the world a better place ::

The best way to get the most out of any T.O.A.S.T. event is to get involved with making it happen. If you’re interested in pARTicipating and making the TOAST Roast even more insanely awesome than previous events, please send an email to thetoastoftoronto@gmail.com stating your interest. Volunteers of all kinds, including folks to help plan and run the event, as well as artists are more than welcome!

May 2012:

:: So, what was this “Final Mission” business all about? ::

In short, our series of UndieComps has been a "social experiment" of sorts: Could we actually successfully create a truly authentic Playa-like temporary autonomous zone right here in Toronto? Not a fundraiser, not just another big DJ’d party, but a no commerce collective experience that blends many if not all of the elements that one enjoys at Burning Man.

The primary objectives were to:

- drive enthusiasm for folks to pARTicipate without having to be incented by anything other than the pleasure and sense of accomplishment that pARTicipating provides.

Objective achieved? Check. We have over 70 volunteer performers and support staff that have paid their admissions and will be putting on the show this time.

- run the event with no profit motive, and instead merely serve as a “gift” to the community and an opportunity unite like-minded Burners and prospective Burners in a creative, free-spirited, safe container.

Objective achieved? Check. We’re in our third year and have you and other good folks like you keep coming back.

- recognize, employ and propagate the 10 principles of Burning Man as best as possible, while remaining autonomous in our event direction and management, and having no reporting ties to Burning Man or any other BM-related organization.

Objective achieved: Check. The T.O.A.S.T. of Toronto is a self-reliant team of Burners that do what many Burners do or claim to do on Playa, while remaining distinct and independent of the BORG and its reports.

- See how far we could go and how folks would behave by affording UndieComp pARTycipants certain freedoms and liberties that they wouldn't typically be able to enjoy in your usual big bars --- or even a other local Burner events.

Objective achieved?  Check.  By tweaking our approach each successive  year,  and encouraging pARTycipants to reflect on and understand that the privileges they are given are just those, "privileges", we've arrived at a well-honed formula that seems to work.

- Be uniquely different from other events in Toronto that claim to embrace the Burning Man ethic.

Objective achieved:  You tell us! ;)

If all things work out for the "Final Mission", and pARTycipants are respectful of the amount of time and energy that we and our raft of event volunteers put into making UndieComp happen, there will may UndieComps in the future.  If folks demonstrate that UndieComp is just another party  to them and are reckless with their partying, this will be the final event that we'll run.

Thanks for pARTycipating.  If you get what is stated above, welcome to the T.O.A.S.T. of Toronto.

See you next year (hopefully)... in your underwear!

PS Let's hope the Mayans were wrong about 2012.  ;)

November 2011:

Songs with WORDS that tell stories!
beigeDude played first ever DJ set at Toronto Decompression 2011, Saturday, November 12 from 11 - 11:30 PM

If you're into songs with words that actually tell stories and that you can sing and dance to, you would have enjoyed checking out auBrey's first foray into "spinning" up a good time at the Official 2011 Toronto Burning Man Decompression at 99 Sudbury St, Toronto. If you happened to make it to auBrey's dancefloor session and liked what you heard (and sang along with), the set list that he played is shown below.

Here's what to expect from a beigeDude dance session:

"I most appreciate tunes that grab you by the lower spine and make you dance! I really dig banjo, harmonica, funk, hard rock, prog rock, roots reggae, klezmer and a few dozen other genres of music. I've been playing the Best of the Ethiopques in the car for the past couple of days, borrowed albums by Neil Young and Serj Tankien (of Queens of the Stoneage fame) from the Toronto Public Library recently, and just ordered Stephen Marley's latest release today. In short, expect anything and you just might be pleasantly surprised."  --- auBrey, November 2011

See you on the dancefloor!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the show!  As promised, here's a run down of the SONGS WITH WORDS that were selected for you:

Tracks played:
1 Jimmy - MIA
2 Belly Dancer - Akon
3 Move On Up - Curtis Mayfield
4 How You Like Me Now - The Heavy (featuring the Dap-Kings horns)
5 Rapper's Delight - The Sugar Hill Gang
6 History Repeating - The Propellerheads featuring Shirley Bassey
7 Comfortably Numb - Scissor Sisters

Tracks selected but not played due to lack of time:
8 Ghetto Superstar - Pras
9 Sinnerman (Felix Da Housecat's Heavenly House Mix) - Nina Simone
10 Little Lion Man - Mumford & Sons

December 2010:

A very TOAST-y Santarchy!

Join us on Saturday, December 18th staring at 2 PM for this annual yuletide play day and pub crawl

With the many merry making moments of the snowy season comes Santarchy --- one of our favourite annual events! If you haven’t been to Santarchy (aka SantaconSanta Rampage and other variants), the event involves dressing up as some icon of the Christmas season (e.g., Santa, an elf, a reindeer, a lump of coal) and parading through the streets of the city while sharing the joy of the season with lucky passers-by.

This raucous fun affair has been successfully and mostly peacefully carried out in Toronto since 2002. Let’s continue the tradition and pour some holiday cheer into ourselves and others in the streets of the Big Smoke!

There are Santa sleighloads of Santarchy photos from both Toronto and around the world that you can peruse to get a sense of what this officially unofficial international event is all about. Have a look at santarchy.com for the dates thatSantarchy will take place in various cities world-wide this year.

Last year there were a number of Toronto Santarchy processions that started at different times and followed different routes. This year The T.O.A.S.T. of Toronto will be setting up an interactive game-based format similar to the scavenger hunt that several Santas took part in last year. The date of this event will be Saturday, December 18th.

Santarchists' "Rules":

1) No pissing off the cops!
2) No being mean to kids!
3) If security guards say go, go!
4) Costumes are mandatory!

Who's In Charge?

If asked, the answer is "SANTA"!

Who is in charge?  SANTA!
Who are you with? SANTA!
What organization are you with? SANTA!
Who organized this? SANTA!

(Who's buying the next round? The Easter Bunny!!!)

Scarols to Print and Sing

What to Wear and Bring

  • A snazzy holiday season-related costume (a dollar store Santa hat or reindeer antlers will do just fine too!)
  • Warm layered clothing and solid, warm comfortable footwear (we'll be walking quite a bit)
  • A flask or two
  • A backpack or Santa sac (especially if Santa is hauling a cost-saving 6-pack)
  • A well-cleaned Windex bottle, jerry can or other "inconspicuous" vessel for Santa libations  (Santa might save some cash this way!)
  • Photo ID
  • Candy canes and other goodies to share
  • A print out of  Scarols (see above)
  • A couple of extra Santa hats (or something similar) to share with new Santas as we invite them to join us
  • Cash for drinks and tips (and food if you like)
  • A camera

Keep the Parade Moving!

Santa uses the following highly educational image to think through which type of drink to order while blazing through his/her Santarchy route:

Like Santa, always remember to TIP your bar elves!!! (Happy bartenders serve Santa quicker!!!)

The Parade Route, Stops and Timing

Take the TTC, arrive alive and save valuable drinking cash!

As Santa will be taking the TTC at least a couple of times on Saturday, Santa should consider buying a super affordable TTC Day Pass which is good for an unlimited number of rides for up to 2 adult riders.

Check this page again before you head out on Saturday for event updates.

October 2010:

Café Phantasmagoria (our officially unofficial Nuit Blanche independent project)

:::  The traveling T.O.A.S.T.E.R. transforms into "Café Phantasmagoria"!!!  :::

If all the world is a stage, then let's acknowledge that Toronto after dark is our usual play house!

:: The Premise:  As the Medium is the Message, the T.O.A.S.T.E.R. is the ART!  ::

"Phantasmagoria” means “a changing  scene  made  up  of  many  elements”, and that is just what this interactive experience will be all about!  Rather than creating a single stationary artistic experience, pARTicpants will bring art to Toronto by taking the T.O.A.S.T.E.R. (The T.O.A.S.T. Entertainment Room), a variously-decorated tubular steel structure on the road to 3 locations around Toronto's west end.   As a team is a system, and a system is more than the sum of its component parts, the underlying spirit of this artistic system will be the bringing together of a cohesive team to turn objects, that on their own serve little or no purpose, into a useful, protective, house of sharing!

Power will be provided by a bike-towed generator, sound system, art and lights!

Once set up, the T.O.A.S.T.E.R. will be adorned by fabrics and lights that will make it stand out as the roving self-containedCafé Phantasmagoria that will be brought to life by performers (e.g., buskers, singers, dancers, fire-spinners), visual artists and a few short films to be displayed.   And there will be coffee!

:: Acts, Route and Timing ::

"Shows" will be about 20 - 30 minutes long, approximately every 2 hours starting at 8 PM.  In between show stops,  the  CaféCrew will travel around and enjoy the other offerings of the night.  See the Acts, Route and Timing section of this site for show times, locations and other specifics.

"Phantasmagoria".  Look it up.  Help make it happen.

Also, be sure to check out our write-up, as well as those of other officially unofficial Nuit Blanche pARTicipants in this awesome alternative listing or renegade art: http://lesruesdesrefuses.com/eventlistings

Acts, Route and Timing

:: When is Toronto's Nuit Blanche 2010 ::

Nuit Blanche Toronto will be held on Saturday, October  2, 2010 from 6:57 PM until sunrise.

:: Follow our Route, Get Out Location Updates on Twitter ::

As Café Phantasmagoria will be a roving "renegade" project, it will be set up in spaces that are available as determined on the night of the big event.  A few spots have been identified already as "potential" stops, but we won't know exactly where we will be until we confirm that nothing else has been formally permitted to be set in a particular location.

Generally speaking, the Café Crew will follow, and will be located somewhere along this route:

1. 8PM - Parkdale:  We'll start out heading east along Queen St. West from Lansdowne Ave., and will set up somewhere between Lansdowne and Dufferin Ave. at around 8 PM for our first "show".  (Our "showtimes" will be approximately every 2 hours.)

2.  10 PM - Liberty Village:  We'll then head south down Dufferin to King Street, then east along King, and south into Liberty Village where we'll find a suitable spot for the 10 PM "show".

3.  Midnight - Queen Street West West:  After we've finished strolling through Liberty Village, we'll head northwest up Sudbury Ave. from King St. to Queen St. West again.  The goal is to land on Queen St. West for our final show, which will be somewhere between Ossington Ave. and Dufferin Ave., again, space availability pending.

TWITTER USERS!  You can pinpoint the Café's actual locations by following me on Twitter.  Follow  'aubreyfriesner' (note the "i" comes before the "e").

You can also follow other CaféCrew members who might be using Foursquare and Facebook for personal status updates.

:: Performances, Art Displays, Projections and More! ::

Several different art displays will pass through the Café including:

  • Fun interactive live music and sing-a-longs with the Mowat Street Marching Band
  • A few short films to by local film makers that are guaranteed to make you laugh
  • Super hot fire-spinning with Dangerous David
  • Chuckles by the minute with Edith Checkerspot
  • Random visualizations and beautiful images of awesome places and activities you might want to get involved with in the future
  • Stunning live music with Kron!k
  • The choreographed lit assembly and deconstruction of the Café by the Café Crew
  • Random acts that might show up (the Café is also an open stage)
  • Coffee!

Contact auBrey at aubreyathome@yahoo.com or 416.994.7964 if you have a piece you would like present.  All art forms are welcome!

July/August 2010:

The T.O.A.S.T. Oasis and Cool Pool (tm) at mOOseman 2010 - Sparking Adventure, Inspiring Community

mOOseman is BurnT, the Toronto Burning Man community's annual summer multi-day weekend event.  In 2010, the T.O.A.S.T. of Toronto brought the T.O.A.S.T. Oasis and Cool Pool (tm) to the event.  The Oasis was a recasting of the T.O.A.S.T.E.R. into an Oasis of fun at  mOOseman 2010's "mOOstropolis" theme camp village, which had no running water or electrical power.  Rather than be stopped by the challenges of the environment, which was much like being on Playa at Burning Man in many ways, the T.O.A.S.T. of Toronto set up, ran and freely shared a 4 - 6 person portable hot tub (i.e., the "Cool Pool (tm)" which they ran all weekend!  Here are some images of the crazy event!

For mOOseman 2011?  A roller coaster, perhaps.  ;)

March 2010: UndieComp 2010!

Remember the "Las Fake Ass North" party from a couple of years back? If you liked that fun fest, you're going to love this Fruity (of the Loomy) affair! Stripped down and showing just the right stuff, this will be a similar night of live acts, games, music, dance, and, of course, a crowning underwear competition!

Plan is for zero-profit, total fun. Cheap drinks, low low priced admission, silly games and prizes, produced and run entirely by volunteers. ALL event proceeds will go directly toward making the event even greater. (E.g., last time most of the surplus cash was poured back into the performers in the form of free drinks and taxis to get them and their gear home safely.) Old school Burning Man-thinking, new school T.O.A.S.T. style!

As you may know, Burning Man (BM) is a series of adventures. Each day brings new WTF?! moments, and is followed by a night of similar random revelations. Bright lights, big city, bigger desert void. For those of us with a nocturnal bent, the night holds endless possibility. So, at our home camp, we ready our bodies, flasks, carry packs and minds for anything, then set out on a journey of discovery. We tend to encounter many diverse sounds, sights and interactions with "the stranger". And we lap it all up heartily. So, too, will be our night at UndieComp 2010

Here's the plan: with a spot light or two, and by using the Centre of Gravity's array of lights, and through setting scents, mounting supplementary mood setting props, lights and art where possible, we'll emulate the experience of a "walkabout by night on the Playa". (The “Playa” is what Burners affectionately call the Black Rock Desert that the BM festival takes place in.) Through pairing live acts with DJ backdrop sounds and art pieces as much as possible, we'll effect the experience of stumbling upon a variety of "Theme Camps" and Playa fixings like at BM.

Burlesque dancers will be coupled with DJs who will mix their piece's music into a set and have that set revolve around or complement the tone of the piece. Fire and other performance acts, likewise using imagery and a DJ's or live act's soundscape, will create an environment that might be experienced at Burning Man. And so on.

This ia a significant departure from past similar BM parties in Toronto, as it will mean that our band of Playa rovers will “travel” together throughout the night and will stop to watch the central focus as it is encountered. This will NOT be just another boom-boom techno party with lights.

Imagine all the goodness of Black Rock City in the comfort of Toronto's Little India... Can't wait!

Set Your Mind At Ease with UndieComp 2010 FAQs

Q. Do I really have to run around in my drawers all night?

While the theme of the event is underwear-related, fully clad pARTicipants (preferably in theme-related costumes) will be entirely welcome.  If you do chose to pARTicpate in your super-awesome-dressed-up underwear, you might also want to bring along a robe of some sort in case you feel a little nipple-y in between busting a move and snuggling in the Panty Plounge.

Q. If I'm stripped down, how am I going to carry my ID, money, Altoids tin, etc.?

For logistically-minded folks, worry not. We'll provide a safe arrangement to store your personal effects while you're parading in your stylish skivvies. It's still a good idea to plan to be self-reliant in regard to securing your things, so we strongly recommend factoring a pouch or some other carry bag into your outfit.  Also, plan to leave anything that you deem of real value at home.  This is a pARTy yo!

Q: What do I do if I want to pARTicipate, but I don't want images or me showing on the Internet in my gotchie?

If you're the adventureous type, but are concerned about showing up on film bearing too much, don't worry; It'll be okay to get caught with your pants down at UndieComp 2010!  We'll endevaour to have photobugs leave their cameras at home for this one or at least be extremely respectful of your wishes not to be photographed if you're photo-phobic.

If you're the camera carrying type, please be considerate and ask other pARTicipants for their permission before you take their photo!  Better yet, leave your camera at home and leave the recall of this intimate affair to your memory alone. :)

Q: What's all this yap about "pARTicipating"?

Here's an important note to consider if you're thinking about joining this little bit of fun. We'd love to have anyone interested in positively contirbuting to the event come out and pARTicipate in one way or other.   As just about anyone who has been involved with a Burning Man-related event will tell you, you'll get the most out of the event by pARTicipating in it.  So get involved if you can and expand your experience!  If you can't get involved before the date of the event, but would like to contribute in some way, contact auBrey at thetoastoftoronto@gmail.com and see how you might be able to do so at the event itself.  Alternatively, you can pARTicipate by gifting, offering some of your special skills, or by simply smiling and interacting with the other event pARTicipants positively!

Q: If I pARTicipate can I get "comps"?

As the event will be run in a Burning Man fashion, there will be no "comps" or guest lists. Everyone contributes at a minimum by paying for their own admission and drinks, as these sales are are the sole source of funding for the event. If there is extra money available after all costs have been covered, particpants who volunteer their performance, art or in some other way (e.g., helping to run the event) will be "gifted" drink tickets or other gifts in the BM spirit.

Q: Where can I learn more about the principles that UndieComp 2010 will reflect?

Have a read through the 10 principles of BM if you're not familiar with them yet.  you can also contact auBrey or any other Burner for an explanation of these principles.  The principles are found at:

http://www.burningman.com/whatisburningman/about_burningman/principles.html
